New Delhi: AS Roma and Eintracht Frankfurt have been fined by UEFA after crowd trouble erupted during their Europa League clash last month. Roma secured a 2-0 win at home, booking their place in the tournament’s playoffs, while Frankfurt still progressed to the top eight despite the defeat. However, the match was overshadowed by incidents in the stands, leading to an investigation by European football’s governing body.

During halftime, fireworks were set off, and rival fans clashed inside the stadium. Stewards and police were quick to intervene, restoring order before the second half resumed without delays. UEFA reviewed the disturbances and decided to take disciplinary action against both clubs. With the governing body tightening its grip on crowd behaviour in European competitions, Roma and Frankfurt now face financial penalties, while one club will also suffer a stadium restriction in their next home match.

Following the investigation, UEFA handed Frankfurt a €20,000 fine for lighting and throwing fireworks, as well as for general crowd disturbances. The German side was also hit with an additional €5,000 fine for damage caused to the stadium. Roma, meanwhile, received a €30,000 fine and a partial stadium closure for their next UEFA club competition home match.

AS Roma and Eintracht Frankfurt were not the only clubs punished, as Dutch club FC Twente also received a €35,000 fine and a partial stadium closure for crowd disturbances in their 1-0 win over Besiktas. UEFA has made it clear that such incidents will not be tolerated, with strict disciplinary measures in place to curb fan trouble.

With the Europa League entering its crucial stages, UEFA will be keeping a close watch on supporter behaviour. Clubs will need to ensure better crowd control to avoid further punishments, as repeat offences could lead to even harsher sanctions, including full stadium bans or points deductions.
