New Delhi: Team India defeated England by 4 wickets in the first ODI at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday, February 6. The Men in Blue take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Shubman Gill scored 87 while Shreyas Iyer also played an explosive knock and an all-round bowling performance Ravindra Jadeja and debutant Harshit Rana were amongst the many positives for Rohit and Co. in Nagpur.

The Men in Blue were asked to bowl first in the series opener and fast bowlers conceded plenty of boundaries in the first 6-7 overs. Phil Salt played a fiery knock and blasted the Indian bowling apart but a miscommunication with Duckeet ended his innings for a 26-ball 43. After his dismissal, the visitors slipped from 75 for 0 to 77 for 3 in quick time.

Jos Buttler batted well and held the innings together with a stunning 52 and Jacob Bethell also scored 51 runs, but both fell after going past their milestones. Jofra Archer’s unbeaten 21 runs off 18 balls ensured that the Three Lions crossed the 240-run mark, but they were few runs short. Harshit Rana picked up 3 wickets on debut and Ravindra Jadeja took 3 wickets while Shami, Axar and Kuldeep also picked up one wicket each.

Gill, Axar shine in run-chase

Chasing the 248-run target, The Men in Blue got off to a poor start as openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma lost their wickets cheaply. Rohit’s lean patch continued in white-ball cricket as well, Saqib Mahmood removed him on 2 runs while Archer dismissed Jaiswal on 15 runs.

After their dismissal, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer forged a 94-run partnership for the third wicket and stabilised India’s innings. Iyer scored a counterattacking half-century but Jacob Bethel removed him on 59 runs. Gill stitched another match-winning 108-run partnership with Axar Patel and Jadeja along with Hardik Pandya finished the match for the team.
