New Delhi: Steve Smith reached yet another milestone in his glittering career with a landmark century on Day 2 of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia at the Galle Cricket Stadium. The Australian batter scored his second successive Test century of the series and reached 36 centuries, equalling the likes of Rahul Dravid and Joe Root in the most centuries list in Test cricket.

The prolific Aussie had surpassed Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar after scoring his 35th Test ton in the opening Test last week at the same venue.

Smith reached the three-figure mark in the 63rd over with a boundary off Kamindu Mendis. He completed his 17th century as captain and seventh in Asia off 191 balls.

Earlier, Smith, while batting on 78, surpassed Ricky Ponting to become the highest run-getter in Tests for Australia in Asia. Smith surpassed the former Aussie captain’s mark of 1889 (48 innings) during his 42nd innings in the Asian sub-continent.

He also broke the record of Allan Border, another former Aussie captain, of most centuries by an Australian in Asia with his seventh Test ton in the continent.

With 36 hundreds to his name, Smith is now only behind Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45), Ricky Ponting (41) and Kumar Sangakkara (38) in the elite list.

The legendary Aussie also equalled India skipper Rohit Sharma in the list of most international centuries by an active batter. Smith went level with Rohit with his 48th international century. Joe Root is second with 52 tons in the list led by Virat Kohli with 81 centuries.
