Nestled in the hills of Kerala’s Idukki district, Munnar is a tranquil hill station and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kerala. It is located at a height of 1600 m above the sea level, and offers stunning view to the visitors. It seems like a fantasy land due its natural landscape, with the hills wrapped in greenery, valleys covered in mist, sprawling tea plantations, cascading waterfalls and the crisp mountain air.
Munnar is located at a place where three mountain ranges meet, the Nallathanni, Mudrapuzha and Kundala. The famous hill station was the summer resort of the British government in India and is today best known for its tea plantations. It was in the 19th century that the Europeans decided to establish tea plantations in Munnar, and today, it has become the identity of the place.
Munnar: The place of Neelakurinji
Munnar is also famous for Neelakurinji. It is a rare plant which only flowers once in 12 years. During the ‘Kurinji season’ in Munnar, the blue hue of the little flower covers the hills and valleys. There is also the Eravikulam National Park which is famous for its endangered inhabitant, the Nilgiri Tahr and also for Neelakurinji. The Anamudi Peak, which is the highest peak in South India is also located there.
The Mattupetty is another attraction in Munnar. Located at a height of 1700 m above sea level, Mattupetty is well known for its beautiful lake and storage masonry dam. There are mesmerising waterfalls at Chinnakanal while the Anayirangal dam is surrounded by lush green tea plantations and evergreen forests. Also, there is the Top Station which offers a panoramic view of the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. A timeless oasis of tranquility, Munnar is a perfect place for those who want to spent some alone time in the middle of nature. For the weary souls, the cool mountain breeze and mist shrouded hills offer a soothing solace.
