New Delhi: Indian men’s hockey skipper Harmanpreet Singh has said that their team’s ultimate aim is to earn a ticket to the 2026 World Cup. The skipper said on Friday that their primary target will be to win every match of the FIH Pro League and finish on the top which will help them earn a direct ticket for the big event.
India team will open their FIH Pro League campaign against Spain on Saturday in Bhubaneswar and Harmanpreet seems to be very confident about India’s good performance right from the beginning. After their opening game, they play Spain again on the next day and then will have matches against Germany on February 16 and on February 19 in the opening leg of the India tour.
We want to play good hockey: Harmanpreet
The Indian skipper further said that their training is going on perfectly from the Hockey India League as they have been preparing for months and have learnt a lot from HIL. Harmanpreet said that they want to play good hockey as a team and their target is to win each and every game. Commenting on the fitness part, Harmanpreet said that the team has been able to maintain their fitness and all the players in the camp are looking in a good shape.
The 2026 men’s hockey World Cup will be held from August 14 to 30 in Wavre, Belgium and Amstelveen, Netherlands. Lavishing praise on his teammates, Harmanpreet also praised HIL’s top-scorer Jugraj Singh for his flicking abilities and said that the rise of the next generation of domestic players is a good sign for the Indian hockey team.
Harmanpreet does not want to take clash against Spain lightly. ‘Spain is a good team, we can’t take them lightly. Our focus is to give our best and win the match,’ he said.
