New Delhi: UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has been riding high on success following his dominant victory against Renato Moicano at the UFC 311 last month. Makhachev submitted Moicano in the first round to retain his lightweight championship belt against the 10th-ranked Brazilian. Makhachev has now made a huge revelation regarding his next fight.
The Dagestani fighter recently revealed during an interview that he has an offer from the UFC that he and his team are considering. Makhachev’s revelations come amid rumours flying around that he will fight the undefeated Featherweight Champion Ilia Topuria. Topuria is the first Georgian fighter to win a UFC championship and currently has a 16-0 record in the competition.
While many want Makhachev to go up against Topuria to prove his worth, the UFC lightweight champion is yet to confirm if he will fight the Georgian. Makhachev recently revealed he has a couple of options lined up for his next fight, including an offer from the UFC but he is waiting to discuss the details with his team before giving his confirmation.
“I can’t announce it yet, but there is an offer that we need to sit down with the team and think about, because there are options. We need to decide together what to do…There is an option in my weight class, and there is an offer from the UFC. But let’s wait for now,” Makhachev told Match TV.
Makhachev’s revelations come after UFC CEO Dana White recently claimed the promotion is working on a big fight that fans wouldn’t have seen coming. However, White has refused to name a particular fighter who will be involved in the bout. Makhachev being one of the best fighters at the moment can potentially be one of the fighters in the big clash.
Ilia Topuria says Jon Jones is the actual GOAT not Khabib Nurmagomedov
Amid rumours of his fight with Makachevm Ilia Topuria recently took a dig at former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was the longest-reigning UFC Lightweight champion and remained undefeated throughout his UFC career. Topuria said he rates Jon Jones over Khabib as the actual GOAT considering the amount of times Jones defended his title.
Topuria echoed the sentiments of UFC CEO White as he rated Jones over Khabib as the GOAT. Khabib and Islam Makhachev are not real brothers but share a close bond having been long-time training partners since childhood. They both trained under Khabib’s father in childhood and are currently the biggest names in the Dagestani UFC contingent.
“You have to give the credit to that man (Jon Jones) because to me it’s too funny when I see people comparing him with the Dagestani guys, even with Khabib, with Islam (Makhachev),” Topuria said on the Full Send podcast.
“All the respect to all the champions, but for example, Khabib, he has how many? 14-15 fights in the UFC… Jon Jones has 15 title defenses. For me, he’s the number one,” he added.
