Premier League 2024/25: 5 things we learned from Matchday 25 of the season

New Delhi: The latest Premier League matchday wrapped up with another humiliating loss for Manchester United as Tottenham secured a narrow win over their league rivals. A depleted United squad fell to a second loss to Spurs in the league this season for the first time in 35 years. While one half of Manchester struggled, the other stormed back in style as Manchester City completely obliterated Newcastle United.

City thrashed the Magpies 4-0 with a commanding performance that seemed more akin to the City of old and not what we’ve seen from them this season. They climbed back into the top four thanks to Brighton’s humbling of Chelsea as the Seagulls breezed past the Blues for the second time in a week, beating them 3-0 at home. They weren’t the only side in the hunt for Europe falling to an embarrassing loss as Nottingham Forest were also humbled 2-1 by Fulham. Let’s dive in to find out what we learned from this weekend’s Premier League action!

5) Arne Slot set for historic debut campaign

Arne Slot has made an electrifying start to life in the Premier League, guiding Liverpool to 60 points in just 25 matches. Their latest 2-1 victory over Wolves further cemented their title credentials, with the Reds showing form of champions and grinding out the result after a wonder goal from Matheus Cunha had brought Wolves back into the game. Goals from Luiz Diaz and Mohamed Salah proved enough for Slot’s side as they continued their charge to a second Premier League title.

With 18 wins, six draws, and just one loss, Slot’s start at Anfield has been nothing short of remarkable. In fact, only José Mourinho has managed to earn more points (64) in his first 25 Premier League matches. Liverpool’s ability to grind out results, even in tough encounters like the Wolves clash, highlights the mentality Slot has instilled. If the Reds continue at this pace, Slot’s debut season could go down as one of the best in Premier League history.

4) David Moyes- Everton’s saviour once again?

David Moyes has breathed new life into Everton, transforming them from relegation candidates into one of the league’s most in-form sides. Their latest 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace marked their fourth win in just six matches under the Scot, taking their tally to 13 points in that span, more than Liverpool and level with Arsenal. Given that the Toffees had only managed three wins in 19 games before his return, Moyes’ impact has been nothing short of remarkable.

The Everton squad has responded positively to his return, with players like Beto and James Tarkowski praising the style of play and renewed belief within the team. Moyes himself has acknowledged the warm reception from the fans, who are starting to trust the process again. With new ownership on the horizon and their form on the rise, Everton’s resurgence under Moyes suggests that brighter days could finally be ahead for the club.

3) Omar Marmoush announces himself in England

Manchester City new signing Omar Marmoush announced himself to the Premier League this weekend with a breathtaking display against Newcastle. The Egypt International, looked a little off pace after impressing in his debut against Chelsea but quickly proved doubters wrong with a sensational display at the Etihad. The 26-year-old produced a solid display and notched up his first goal for the club with an audacious chip over Martin Dúbravka.

He then completely tore up apart the Magpies, getting to his hattrick in under 14 minutes to storm into the hearts of City fans. Marmoush got to his first hattrick of the season in just 13 minutes and 54 seconds, becoming the fourth fastest hattrick scorer in Manchester City’s history, behind only Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Raheem Sterling. With his first goals for the club in the bag now, Marmoush can look to build on his fantastic display this weekend.

2) Sporting Directors could cost Chelsea Champions League

Chelsea are facing an injury crisis in attack with the club having a number of attackers out through injury. Both of the club’s strikers, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu face a lengthy spell on the sidelines and winger Noni Madueke picked up an injury early in the Brighton game as well. With Mykhailo Mudryk still provisionally suspended for a doping charge, the club are depleted in the attacking department. The Blues are crying out for a clinical forward since last season but in the two windows since, the sporting directors haven’t signed a proven striker.

The only goal threat for the club comes from Cole Palmer and even he is ineffective without a proper number nine to play off. The club needs goals from the wings but none of the club’s wingers are particularly proficient in front of goal and no signing was made to address this issue by the board. Following their defeat to Brighton, Chelsea have fallen to sixth in the table and this lack of awareness from the club’s sporting directors can cost Chelsea a UEFA Champions League spot.

1) Manchester United showing relegation form

Manchester United’s struggles this season have reached historic lows, with the now having lost almost half of the games they’ve played in the season. The club are showing relegation form as evidence by their 12 defeats in 25 Premier League games, which is their worst start since the infamous 1973-74 campaign, which ended in relegation. Their form has been nothing short of alarming, with just eight wins and five draws, leaving them far off the pace in the European race.

Since December 4th, 10 days after Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge of the club, United have lost eight of their last 12 Premier League matches, a record worse than nearly every team in the division. Only Leicester and Southampton, both of whom sit in the relegation zone, have suffered more defeats in that period. With injuries piling up and performances showing little sign of improvement, Ruben Amorim’s side is in desperate need of a turnaround before the season spirals into complete disaster.
