New Delhi: The Railway Ministry, after the stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station that left 18 dead and a dozen injured, said that several measures have been enforced to avoid any such incident in the future. According to the Ministry, regular trains will continue to be operated from all platforms as usual.
Amid all this, the New Delhi Railway Station continued to witness a surge of passengers, most of whom were travelling to Pryagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela.
Enhanced Security Measures at New Delhi Station Following Stampede
According to PTI, a source in the Delhi Police said eight paramilitary forces companies have been deployed inside and outside the station area. Trains going towards Prayagraj are being monitored.
He said Joint CP (Transport) Vijay Singh and DCP (Railway) KPS Malhotra are monitoring the situation. “We have set up barricades, intensified patrolling and deployed quick reaction teams. CCTV surveillance has also been enhanced with control rooms monitoring real-time footage,” a Delhi police official said.
Crowd Management Strategies Implemented for Maha Kumbh Mela Rush
Among other crowd control measures, a designated ‘pandal’ has been set up outside the station where passengers can rest while waiting for their trains. The ‘pandal’ will remain in place until February 26, when the Maha Kumbh Mela ends.
Railway Minister Vaishnaw said holding areas will be created at 60 stations experiencing high footfalls, a separate crowd management manual will be formulated, and passengers will be educated not to sit on stairs.
Meanwhile, East Central Railway (ECR) announced on Monday that it had strictly enforced the prohibition on people entering railway stations without valid tickets in light of the heavy rush of passengers across Bihar due to Maha Kumbh.
ECR authorities also assist the local district administration and police enforce the prohibition.
The CPRO added that adequate arrangements, including establishing additional ticket counters and other necessary facilities, have been made to manage the sudden rush of passengers.
The railways also deployed additional staff at certain stations for this purpose. The official said Several Kumbh Mela special trains run from Patna Junction daily to handle the rush.
The unprecedented rush of passengers for Maha Kumbh Mela was seen at several stations across Bihar, including Patna, Danapur, Ara, Gaya, Sasaram, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, and Darbhanga.
Meanwhile, due to huge traffic jams witnessed on the highways leading to Prayagraj, seven men from Kamhariya village in Bihar’s Buxar district decided to visit Prayagraj via a moto-propelled boat. They travelled 275 km along the Ganga River from Buxar to Prayagraj. They started their journey on February 11 and reached Prayagraj on February 13. They have now returned to their village.
Following a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, authorities have implemented enhanced security and crowd control measures. The increased security includes additional police presence, improved CCTV surveillance, and designated waiting areas. The measures aim to prevent future incidents, particularly during events like the Maha Kumbh Mela, which caused a surge in passenger numbers.
