Chemical-Free Mahaprasad- ‘Amrit Anna’
In a significant move, the Odisha state government has initiated efforts to make the Mahaprasad completely chemical-free. Under this initiative, only organic rice and vegetables will be used in its preparation. This special project has been named ‘Amrit Anna’, and a formal proposal has been put forward to commence this initiative.
Following discussions among government officials, the proposal was well received by the sevayats of the Jagannath Temple, who play a crucial role in temple rituals and operations.
Who prepares the Mahaprasad?
The responsibility of preparing the sacred Mahaprasad lies with a special category of temple servitors known as the Suara-Mahasuara Nijog. These temple cooks, who follow ancient traditions, prepare the Prasad with deep reverence and meticulous attention to religious customs.
With the introduction of organic ingredients, both the Suara-Mahasuara Nijog and the temple administration have extended their full support to this initiative.
Currently, the essential ingredients such as rice, vegetables, pulses, and other food items for Mahaprasad are procured from the local market. The Odisha Milk Federation supplies ghee to the temple, which plays a crucial role in the preparation process.
Organic farming for ‘Amrit Anna’ Mahaprasad
Under the ‘Amrit Anna’ initiative, the Mahaprasad will be prepared using organic rice varieties native to Odisha, including Kalajira, Pimpudibasa, and Jubarja. Among these, Kalajira rice already holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognising its unique heritage and quality.
The cultivation of organic rice will strictly adhere to natural farming techniques, utilising cow dung, cow urine, and other organic fertilisers, eliminating the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. In the initial phase, organic rice cultivation is planned over 100 to 200 acres of land, which may be expanded further depending on the success of the project.
This transition to chemical-free Mahaprasad reflects a significant step towards sustainability and reinforces the spiritual sanctity of the offerings made to Lord Jagannath. It also aligns with the broader vision of promoting organic farming and food safety, benefiting both devotees and local farmers alike.
With the successful implementation of ‘Amrit Anna,’ Jagannath Temple sets an inspiring example of how sacred traditions can evolve while staying true to their roots. As devotees continue to receive Mahaprasad as a divine blessing, they can now do so with the added assurance of consuming a truly pure and organic offering.
