New Delhi: The Bollywood historical action film ‘Chhaava’, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has garnered tremendous attention. The movie is an adaptation of the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant, and while Vicky Kaushal has essayed the role of Sambhaji in the film, the role of Yesubai Bhonsale, his wife has been played by Rashmika Mandanna. The role of Yesubai in the life of Sambhaji is extremely important, and in this article, we will take a look at the life and legacy of the brave woman.

The genesis of the Maratha Empire was founded Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who carved out his kingdom following conflicts with the Mughal Empire and the Sultanate of Bijapur. Shivaji left behind an empire which became one of the leading forces in the Indian subcontinent, challenging the might of the Mughals. After his death, his son Sambhaji carried forward the legacy. And in his journey, the contributions of Yesubai Bhonsale played a big role.

Yesubai Bhonsale: The brave Maratha woman who fought with Sambhaji

Yesubai Bhonsale was born as Rajau Shirke and she was the daughter of Maratha Sardar Pilajirao Shirke. She was the wife of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Mahara and a significant political leader who led the Maratha Empire when it was going through a turbulent phase.

Yesubai was known as the Maratha Empire’s Chhatrapati Maharani and was officially coronated Queen of Swarajya. The mother of Chhatrapati Shahu I, who led the Maratha Empire after Sambhaji, she shared power of the empire with Chatrapati Sambhaji and later as the Queen Mother. When Sambhaji was away from the Maratha capital due to battles, she took all the political decisions.

After Jijabai, Shivaji’s mother, Yesubai was the one who could interfere in the case of justice in the empire. Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj gave Yesubai her own seal so that she could make political decisions independently. In the absence of Chhatrapati, she was the main person holding powers to look after the Maratha Empire. After Sambhaji was brutally executed by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1689, Yesubai exhibited remarkable diplomacy and courage. Yesubai acted as a pillar of the Maratha Empire and the Mughals imprisoned her for more than two decades. Despite that, she remained a beacon of strength and ensured the Maratha Empire never faltered. In 1719, Yesubai was released and she returned to Satara to her son Shahu on July 4, which is celebrated as a “Day of Bravery” every year.

Yesubai Bhonsale, wife of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, was a pivotal figure in the Maratha Empire.
