How to make Makhana Kheer – A creamy and healthy Indian dessert

New Delhi: Makhana Kheer is a delicious and nutritious Indian dessert made with fox nuts (makhana), milk, and dried fruits. This popular sweet dish is often enjoyed during festivals, fasting periods, and special occasions. Renowned for its creamy texture and rich flavour, Makhana Kheer is not only a treat for the palate but also a powerhouse of nutrition. Makhana is rich in protein, fibre, and essential minerals, making this kheer a healthier alternative to other sweets.

This dessert holds particular significance during Hindu fasting periods. It is light on the stomach yet provides sustained energy. The slow-cooking process of simmering makhana in milk enhances its flavour and allows the aromas of saffron, cardamom, and nuts to infuse harmoniously. The natural sweetness of makhana, combined with sugar or jaggery, creates a well-balanced and indulgent dessert.

  • Add the roasted makhana to the simmering milk and cook for 10–12 minutes until soft.
  • Stir in the sugar, chopped dried fruits, and saffron strands, mixing well.
  • Add the cardamom powder and cook for a further 5 minutes until the kheer thickens.
  • Garnish with dried fruits and serve either warm or chilled, as preferred.
