New Delhi: Virat Kohli became only the second batter to score 8000 runs in ODI run-chase during India’s ICC Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia in Dubai on Tuesday.

He took 159 innings and 301 matches to follow his idol Sachin Tendulkar and enter the club of 8000 runs in ODI run chases. Tendulkar tops the list with 8720 runs from 232 innings, ahead of Kohli and India skipper Rohit Sharma (6115).

Kohli needed 21 runs to complete the landmark and achieved it in the 16th over of India’s 265-run chase. He dispatched a short of a length delivery down leg from Nathan Ellis behind square leg for a boundary.

The 36-year-old reached the milestone soon after India lost their openers Rohit and Shubman Gill early in the run chase. Out of Kohli’s 51 tons in ODIs, Kohli has scored 28 of them while batting second.

He is on top in the share of centuries list, ahead of Tendulkar, who scored 17 hundreds while Rohit has made 16 tons. Kohli has scored over 5900 runs in run chases with 70 per cent of those runs resulting in India’s wins, which is the highest ratio for any batter in the 50-over format.

With his half century, Kohli recorded his 24th 50-plus score to overtake Tendulkar (23).

Kohli second on most catches list

Kohli has moved up to second spot in terms of catches taken in ODIs, surpassing former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting.

He caught Nathan Ellis at long-on off Mohammed Shami to take his 16st catch on Tuesday, going one above Ponting in the list og most successful fielders.

Kohli had caught Josh Inglis earlier in the match to go level with Ponting and is now only behind Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene, who has 218 catches in 448 games.

In India’s win over Pakistan, Kohli had surpassed Mohammad Azharuddin to become India’s most successful fielder in ODIs.
