Medical marvel: Australian man becomes first person to live 100 days on fake, titanium heart

ew Delhi: In what appears to be a one-of-a-kind medical marvel, an Australian man made history by becoming the first person in the world to survive 100 days on an artificial heart made from titanium. The patient who has not been identified is also the sixth person in Australia to receive a titanium heart after struggling with severe heart failure. The patient from South Wales received a device known as BiVACOR in a Sydney hospital in November last year. The patient in his 40s managed to survive with the titanium heart for a long without any major complications. Researchers and doctors further noted that the device associated with this development has been an unfathomable clinical success.

What is BiVACOR?

BiVACOR is a total heart replacement device created by Queensland-born Dr Daniel Timms which works as a bridge to keep patients alive until a donor is available for a heart transplant. This works as a regular pump magnetically suspended rotor that circulates blood in regular pulses all over the body. A cord tunneled under the skin connects the device to a portable battery-backed external controller which can be plugged at night.

Unlike other heart devices that usually fail and have multiple moving parts, this new device has only one moving part which is likely to cause fewer problems and internal wear and tear. Although the BiVACOR is currently being relied upon as a temporary device for relief, some cardiologists claim that it could soon be the permanent solution for people who are eligible for transplants citing age and comorbidities. But this is ye tot be ascertained in trials. Despite being a success, the functioning time of the device continues to be less than that of a donor heart, which is usually over 10 years or 3000 days.
