New Delhi: Not many would have expected, but star all-rounder Hardik Pandya won’t be leading Mumbai Indians (MI) in their opening Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Pandya confirmed this on Wednesday, saying that Suryakumar Yadav will be replacing him for the gam,e and he will be sitting out of it.
Pandya is set to miss the first match of the season due to an over-rate ban he incurred in the final MI match of the IPL 2024 season. The match is scheduled for March 23 and will be played at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. Pandya was addressing the media alongside their head coach, Mahela Jayawardene who confirmed that the BCCI informed the Mumbai Indians about Hardik Pandya’s ban.
“Yeah, Surya obviously leads India as well. When I am not there, he is the ideal choice in this format (to captain). He is an exciting option as well,” Pandya said during MI’s pre-season press conference on Wednesday.
