Anasuya Sengupta makes history by becoming FIRST Indian to win Best Actress at Cannes

New Delhi: India is shining at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Now, the Indian actor, Anasuya Sengupta, has won big at Cannes 2024. Apart from All We Imagine As Light receiving rave response, Shyam Benegal’s Manthan getting a special screening and several Indian celebrities and influencers turning heads on the red carpet, Indian films and actors were also nominated under several categories at the Cannes Film Festival.

Anasuya Sengupta creates history

Anasuya Sengupta, who hails from Kolkata, won Un Certain Regard Prize for Best Actress for her performance in The Shameless. She has created a history by becoming the first Indian actor to win the coveted award. Directed and written by Bulgarian filmmaker Konstantin Bojanov, the film revolves around Renuka, who escapes from a Delhi brothel after killing a police officer.

Apart from her, two Indian films Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know and Bunnyhood won the first and third place, respectively, in the La Cinef Selection at this year’s Cannes.

Earlier, Anasuya opened up about her first reaction when she was informed about her film going to Cannes. She told to The Kolkata, “I received the news when Konstantin sent me a link to the press conference announcing the Cannes official selections. When our film’s name was announced, I jumped out of the chair with ecstasy!”

Who is Anasuya Sengupta?

Anasuya Sengupta hails from Kolkata and holds a degree in English literature from Jadavpur University. She never wanted to become an actor in the first place and wanted to discover herself through journalism. But, life had other plans. She dabbled in theatre for sometime before shifting to Mumbai in 2013. There she worked as production designer. She also featured in a supporting role in Anjan Dutta’s 2009 film Madly Bangalee. She also lent her expertise to visual panaroma of the popular show, Masaba Masaba. Meanwhile, she is married to Yashdeep, who is also an artist.
