OpenAI closes $40 billion SoftBank funding at $300 billion valuation

New Delhi: OpenAI has raised $40 billion at a $300 billion post-money valuation in order to boost the frontiers of AI research event further. It would help more powerful tools for the California-based artificial intelligence research organisation’s ace product ChatGPT, which is being used by 500 million people across the globe each week.

The fundraising came through by SoftBank Group, a Japanese multinational investment holding company based in Tokyo. OpenAI said the funding will enable them to build AI systems which will bolster features such as scientific discovery, enhancement of human creativity, and personalised education.

“Hundreds of millions people use ChatGPT each week,” said Sam Altman, the OpenAI chief executive. “This investment helps us push the frontier and make AI more useful in everyday life.”

Altman believes that the fundraiser deal was successful because ChatGPT attracted a million users within an hour after its new image generation feature takes off with consumers with many were fascinated by the introduction of Studio Ghibli-style enigma.

Here’s how the investment works

The Japanese multinational firm will first put $10bn into OpenAI and later add $30bn at the end of the 2025 calendar year. A total of 75% of funding will be provided in the latest round by SoftBank Group , and the rest will be provided by Microsoft, which is a key supporter of OpenAI, Coatue Management, Altimeter Capital and Thrive Capital.

“AI is a defining force shaping humanity’s future,” said Masayoshi Son, the chair and chief executive of SoftBank. “Our expanded partnership with OpenAI accelerates our shared vision to unlock its full potential.”

Additionally, OpenAI announced that it was building a more OpenAI generative model as it faces stiff competition in the space from DeepSeek and Meta given the two AIs offer free model. The Open AI aims to launch ‘open weight’ model, which can be fine-tuned by the users. Open AI is one of the firms that believes that open models is riskier.

OpenAI secured a massive $40 billion investment led by SoftBank, valuing the company at $300 billion. This funding will accelerate AI research, enhance ChatGPT’s capabilities, and support the development of new, more open AI models.  Business Business News – Personal Finance News, Share Market News, BSE/NSE News, Stock Exchange News Today
