New Delhi: Inter Miami cemented their spot as the only unbeaten side left in Major League Soccer after a gritty 1-0 win over Columbus Crew at a packed Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland on Saturday.
With over 60,000 fans in attendance, much of the crowd had turned up to catch a glimpse of Lionel Messi, though the Argentine had a relatively quiet night. Still, the visitors got the job done thanks to a well-timed diving header from Benjamin Cremaschi in the 30th minute, a moment that ultimately separated the two sides.
The Crew, who hadn’t lost a game this season until Saturday, had their moments. Daniel Gazdag almost opened the scoring with a lofted attempt that narrowly sailed over the bar. Max Arfsten also came close, forcing Inter’s goalkeeper Oscar Ustari into action following a slick passing move from Columbus.

Despite the home side’s strong start, it was Miami who struck first. Luis Suarez picked out Marcelo Weigandt with a deep pass, and the full-back whipped in a first-time cross that Cremaschi met with a brave diving header. It was a goal against the run of play but one Miami would fiercely defend.
Messi showed flashes of his brilliance, weaving through defenders and curling a shot just wide shortly after the opener but it was the Crew who dominated possession and chances in the second half.
Columbus missed the presence of former striker Cucho Hernandez, who departed for Real Betis earlier this year. Diego Rossi missed a golden chance from the centre of the box, and Arfsten couldn’t make his shot count despite clever footwork to create space. Their best late opportunity came in stoppage time when Andres Herrera drilled in a dangerous low cross, but Gazdag’s awkward attempt with the outside of his boot squandered the moment.
After the match, Cremaschi admitted it wasn’t Miami’s best showing but hailed the result. He said, “They’re a really strong side, and we had to dig deep. But getting three points in a place like this means a lot.”

Inter Miami will next be seen in action on Friday as they take on Vancouver in the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal first leg.
