New Delhi: Vaibhav Suryavanshi claimed all the spotlight when he made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut on Saturday, which arrived at a tender age of 14. In the Rajasthan Royals (RR) vs Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) clash, Suryavanshi featured as an impact substitute and lit up the Sawai Mansingh Stadium with a whirlwind knock of 20-ball 34, becoming the youngest-ever debutant in the history of the IPL.

The news of his “utterly absurd” debut appearance reached across the globe and also impressed Indian-origin Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who tweeted his praise for the teenager. Taking to his “X” handle, Pichai wrote, “Woke up to watch an 8th grader play in the IPL!!!! What a debut!”, while retweeting a video of Suryavanshi’s six from the game, posted by IPL.

The six was how Suryavanshi got off the mark in the cash-rich league, making a statement on the big stage. Coming out as an opener with Yashasvi Jaiswal during the run-chase, Suryavanshi blasted a six off the first delivery he faced from Shardul Thakur, leaving everyone in awe. It was an off-length delivery which was sent over the covers region for a stunning six. In the next over, Avesh Khan’s first delivery to him was hit out of the park as well, getting off to a flyer.

Suryavanshi breaks records with debut

Suryavanshi’s debut turned out to be a record-breaking affair as he registered three glorious feats with his sizzling first IPL game.

– Aged 14 years and 23 days, Suryavanshi has now become the youngest-ever debutant in the IPL, which kicked off in 2008. Suryavanshi broke the record of Prayas Ray Barman, who made his IPL debut at 16 years and 157 days in 2019, for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

– Suryavanshi is also the youngest batter to hit a six in the IPL now. Before his debut, the record was held by Riyan Parag (RR), who hit a six ahed 17 years and 161 days. The teenager is also the youngest to hit a four in the IPL as well. Before him, Prayas held the record for six years.

– Suryavanshi has also joined the elite company of Andre Russell, Kevon Cooper, Rob Quiney, Aniket Choudhary, Carlos Braithwaite, Javon Searles, Maheesh Theekshana, Siddhesh Lad, and Sameer Rizvi, who have all kickstarted their IPL careers with a six on the very first ball faced. He has become only the 10th batter in IPL history to have done so.
