Rising from the ashes: Burnley’s steel, Leeds United’s spirit light the way home

New Delhi: Burnley and Leeds United are heading back to the Premier League, both clinching promotion from the Championship after a dramatic turn of events. For Leeds, the long road back took just two seasons, while for Burnley, it’s a swift return after just a year away. Both clubs have battled fiercely all campaign, and as things stand, they have earned their spots at the top table of English football once again.

It’s been a rollercoaster twelve months for Leeds United. Last season, they finished third and narrowly missed out on promotion, falling to Southampton in the play-off final. That defeat brought heartbreak, and the summer only added to their woes. Rising star Archie Gray was sold to Tottenham, Player of the Season Crysencio Summerville joined West Ham, and Georginio Rutter left for Brighton in a surprise move after the season had already started.

Still, the Whites weren’t short of quality; their permanent deals for Joe Rodon and Jayden Bogle added steel at the back while Japan’s Ao Tanaka brought energy to midfield. Loans for Joe Rothwell and Manor Solomon added depth. Despite a shaky start to the campaign, Daniel Farke’s men clicked into gear with a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday and never really looked back.

Elland Road becomes a fortress

Leeds have turned Elland Road into a fortress this season, registering a single home defeat that came back in mid-September against Burnley, but they responded in style. A string of eye-catching wins followed, including a 7-0 demolition of Cardiff and dramatic comeback victories over fellow promotion chasers Sunderland and Sheffield United.

Even when form dipped slightly in March, they registered just one win in five matches, but their rivals failed to capitalise on their errors. Farke made a bold decision by replacing Illan Meslier with Karl Darlow in goal after costly errors, and it paid off. The team responded, and key results, like a 1-1 draw away at Luton, proved crucial in hindsight as Sheffield United faltered.

Burnley’s defensive wall proves unbreakable

While Leeds impressed with their attacking play, Burnley’s campaign has been built on a rock-solid defence. Scott Parker’s side have now gone 31 games unbeaten, with the latest being a crucial win that not only secured their own promotion but also confirmed Leeds’ return to the top flight.

Midfielder Josh Brownhill starred once again, scoring twice to take his season tally to 16. The Clarets’ defensive numbers have been staggering, just 15 goals conceded in 44 games and a chance to set an all-time record for the meanest defence in English league football. Their current average of 0.34 goals conceded per game is better than even the legendary 1978-79 Liverpool and 2004-05 Chelsea sides.

Farke eyes another Championship title

Daniel Farke knows what it takes to win the Championship, and he is on the verge of doing it for a third time. He twice guided Norwich City to promotion, and now he has done it again with Leeds. With two games remaining against Bristol City and Plymouth Argyle, a win against both will guarantee them the title. Even one could be enough given their superior goal difference over Burnley.

Importantly, this promotion means more for Leeds fans as many of whom couldn’t properly celebrate their last rise to the Premier League in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Now, they have a chance to soak in the success and dream of a stronger, more sustainable top-flight future.

The hard work begins now

The celebrations will be loud but brief as both Burnley and Leeds now face the daunting task of staying up next season, a feat none of the last six promoted sides managed. A huge summer awaits, especially for Farke, who opted not to dip into the January transfer market. That decision, bold at the time, looks wise in hindsight.

As the dust settles on an intense season, both clubs know the real challenge is just beginning. But for now, they have earned their moment with promotion secured and Premier League here they come.
