His brother Haseeb reported the matter to the Amroha police station in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, following which an FIR was registered in the matter. Shami is currently playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

As per Shami’s brother Haseeb, the email came on Sunday, May 04. The sender has been identified as Rajput Sindar, who also demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore from the Indian cricketer. The FIR was reportedly registered under sections 308(4) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) 2023, and sections 66d and 66e of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008.

Shami was not picked in the playing XI for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their all-important clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday. He was snubbed from the XI alongside all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. Shami has not been in the best of form with the ball for SRH so far this season.
