New Delhi: The English trio of Jofra Archer, Jamie Overton and Sam Curran will not return to India for the remaining matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, which resumes on May 17, according to a report in Cricbuzz.
Their compatriots Jos Buttler, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone and Jacob Bethell, among others, though, will arrive in India on Wednesday night to finish their IPL duties.
A high-ranked official of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) told Cricbuzz that England players are divided over returning to India, with some coming back to join their respective franchises, while some have decided to stay back. According to the report in Cricbuzz, the development was also confirmed by the players’ respective franchises.
After the announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of a major military conflict, the BCCI and franchisees ramped up pressure on foreign boards to ensure the return of their players for the Indian Premier League. The world’s most popular cricket league was suspended last week because of the India-Pakistan military conflict in the wake of the devastating Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
No Archer, Curran for remaining IPL matches but Buttler, Bethell set to return
According to inputs from the ECB and the IPL franchises, Buttler is likely to reach Ahmedabad on Wednesday night. Will Jacks is also expected to land tonight to be with the Mumbai Indians squad at the Wankhede Stadium for practice from Thursday, May 15.
Meanwhile, Lancashire all-rounder Liam Livingstone is believed to be on a flight to Bengaluru. Phil Salt’s return, though, is doubtful, but RCB’s other recruit from England, Bethell, is set to land in India.
CSK, meanwhile, have no plans to name temporary replacements for Curran and Overton. Archer, on the other hand, will not return because of an injury, an RR official told Cricbuzz.
Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Moeen Ali is reportedly undecided on his return to India.
The remainder of the IPL matches will be held at six venues. The knockouts will begin on May 29, while the final will be played on June 3, most likely in Ahmedabad.
