Mumbai: In the Hindu calendar, Ekadashi is one of the most sacred days, observed twice a month and associated with spiritual discipline, devotion, and fasting. Among these, Nirjala Ekadashi — which literally means “Ekadashi without water” — is considered the most powerful and rewarding. Falling during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the Jyestha month, this fast is usually observed with complete abstinence from both food and water. While the fast is ideally kept without even a sip of water, those with medical concerns are encouraged to observe it based on their physical capacity.
What makes 2025 truly special is the occurrence of Nirjala Ekadashi on two consecutive days — an extremely rare astrological event. This year, devotees will have the opportunity to observe the fast on 6 June under the Hasta Nakshatra, and again on 7 June under the Chitra Nakshatra. According to tradition, householders (grihasth) will observe the fast on 6 June, while saints and followers of the Vaishnav Sampradaya will keep the fast on 7 June. This double observance is being hailed as highly auspicious and spiritually potent.
Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi
As per religious beliefs, keeping the Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat is equal in merit to observing all 24 Ekadashi fasts of the year. On this day, special puja is offered to Bhagwan Vishnu, and devotees maintain a strict fast — ideally without consuming even a drop of water. The fast is broken the next day, on Dwadashi Tithi, after sunrise, as per traditional rules of Vrat Parana (breaking the fast). Renouncing water is believed to symbolise complete purification of both body and mind.
The double observance in 2025 is seen as a rare and divine alignment (durlabh yog), offering devotees two powerful chances to receive Vishnu Kripa (Lord Vishnu’s blessings) and remove past karmic burdens.
Nirjala Ekadashi Mantra
Devotees are encouraged to chant this sacred verse to invoke Lord Vishnu’s grace on Nirjala Ekadashi:
“Shaantaakaaram Bhujagashayanam Padmanaabham Suresham,
Vishwaadhaaram Gaganasadrisham Meghavarnam Shubhaangam,
Lakshmikantam Kamalanayanam Yogibhirdhyaana Gamyam,
Vande Vishnum Bhavabhayaharam Sarvalokaikanatham.”
Translation:
I bow to Lord Vishnu, who has a peaceful form, reclines on the serpent, has a lotus in his navel, and is the lord of the gods. He supports the universe, resembles the vast sky, is cloud-hued and beautiful. He is the consort of Lakshmi, lotus-eyed, and accessible to yogis through meditation. He removes fear from worldly existence and is the one true lord of all realms.
