New Delhi: Jose Mourinho has continued his war of words with Turkish football by aiming a new dig at the quality of the league following Fenerbache’s 2-4 defeat to Hatayspor. The Portuguese serial winner has won trophies everywhere he has managed so far, but is set to end the 2024-25 campaign empty-handed in Istanbul.
Mourinho lost the Super Lig title to arch-rivals Galatasaray, while his team was knocked out in the Europa League last-16 against Rangers.
Mourinho, the self-proclaimed “Special One”, has made a habit of winning trophies in any given campaign, so it’s natural, a trophyless season sparks doubts over his ability to win more.
The 62-year-old hit back at that suggestion following the loss to Hatayspor, pointing to his trophy-laden CV:
“In the last seven years, I’ve played in more European finals than Turkish football has in its entire history. With Fenerbahce, we even fought for a spot in last season’s Champions League, but the summer was tough for us. We were knocked out in the final moments, on a penalty.
“Next summer, we’ll fight to reach the Champions League (again). We need to go through the qualification and play-offs. We must prepare as best as possible for those matches”, he said.
Will Mourinho stay in Turkish League?
Mourinho’s latest comments give a clear indication about his future, which, for now, looks set to be in Turkey. There have been rumours about Mourinho’s departure from the Turkish league as a result of his strained relationship with league officials and referees. However, he has not yet indicated that he is unwilling to break the contract, which runs till 2026.
“I can show you an interview our president gave a few weeks ago. In it, he asked me to stay. The president trusts me – that’s well known. If the situation has changed, I haven’t been informed,” Mourinho said on his future in Turkey.
Mourinho boasts a rich haul of trophies, including the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League and domestic titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.
