New Delhi: Several people were injured in a knife attack in the German city of Mannheim on Friday, AP reported. The attacker, not identified in the report, was also shot and injured by the police. The incident took place around 11:30 in the afternoon in an area known as Marktplatz, a square in downtown Mannheim. Police, thus far, have not revealed the extent of the injuries suffered by those who were caught up in the attack but have specified in a statement that there is no longer any danger to the public.
According to a report by German state news broadcaster Deutsche Welle, the attack took place during a far-right rally organised by the Citizens’ Movement Pax Europa, with outspoken anti-Islam activist Michael Stürzenberger also being present at the rally event as a speaker. Reports indicate that Stürzenberger was one of the individuals who were injured during the knife attack.
A police officer was also, reportedly, injured in the incident. Citing coverage by the DPA news agency, the DW report said that the officer in question has been severely injured and is undergoing surgery after the attack.
