New Delhi: You can’t keep the sporting life in Barcelona quiet for too long. With their football team having taken the La Liga, it is the motorsport world’s stop, as Formula One heads to Barcelona for the weekend before a week-long break in action. It was yet another dominant performance from the McLaren last Sunday, this time around it was Lando Norris who took his first win at the fabled Monaco. With a split view on the two-stop strategy far away, it is time to focus on the Spanish Grand Prix taking place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
FIA yet again finds itself at the centre of a controversy as it debuts the flexible wing at the Spanish GP. In simple words, the wings on an F1 car flex under the load of air moving over their surfaces, but with a Flexi wing, there are regulation that limits how much is allowed. The FIA is introducing a tightening of load tests applied to F1 cars’ front wings. This will hopefully address concerns over the flexibility and performance that teams might gain through the use of wings.

This has been a season where McLarens have been dominating the motorsport. The teams have not secured a win only twice after eight races, with both those races being won by Max Verstappen. After last Sunday’s win, the difference between Norris and Oscar Piastri remains at just three points. Piastri has 161 points while his teammate has 158. The duo have ensured that McLaren have a point difference of 72 points from the second-placed Mercedes.
Mercedes themselves have now had consecutive bad outings, with the team failing to score in the Monaco race last weekend and George Russell taking six points in the Imola race the weekend before. Russell has dropped from third place in the driver’s championship, with Max Verstappen now having a gap of 37 points. Over the last couple of race weekends, Ferrari have shown some pace with Charles Leclerc coming second at his home in Monaco.
With 79 points from the season so far, his teammate Lewis Hamilton is just 16 points behind and has now back-to-back top-five finishes as well. In terms of the teams, following the Mercedes closely is Red Bull at third, who have 143 points and are just one point ahead of the Ferrari team. Williams’ team is fifth but with a huge margin of 88 points. In what has been evident during the practice session, the two McLarens still have good pace and will be the team to beat in the race.
