New Delhi: Heavy rains in Maharashtra and some other states have damaged onion and tomato crops, affecting the supply of the essential vegetables. The prices of tomatoes have increased from Rs 20 to Rs 30 in retail. Reports are suggesting that the rate of tomatoes could skyrocket in the next two weeks and reach in the range of Rs 80 to Rs 100 in a month.
The onion prices have also increased. It is being reported that the rate of onions can reach Rs 50 per kg in the coming days.
In the last two days, i.e. on June 1 and 2, the prices of onion and tomato have recorded a surge of 40 to 50 percent in the retail market. On May 31, the onions were selling at Rs 20-25 per kg in the markets of Delhi, while on June 2, it was available for Rs 30-40 per kg.
The tomatoes were selling at Rs 20 per kilogram on May 31, 2025, but now they are being sold at Rs 30-40 per kilogram. Within a few days, tomato prices jumped 75 percent, while rates of onion witnessed a rise of 50 percent.
In Nashik district of Maharashtra, which is considered to be one of the biggest wholesale markets for onions in India, has recorded a price jump of 20 percent in the last few days. The heavy rains have damaged the crop and reduced the arrival of vegetables in the market.
Trade sources said that the government is likely to purchase onions which could lead to rates moving north. In Lasalgaon wholesale market of Nashik, the largest wholesale onion market in India, the average price has increased by about 20 percent from Rs 11.50 per kg on May 15 to Rs 14 on May 31.
Money9 quotes Pappu Singh, a retail trader of onion and tomato in Delhi, saying that the heavy rainfall has delayed the arrival of onions and tomatoes. He said that in the next 15 days, the price of tomato can cross Rs 50 per kg, while the price of onion can remain between Rs 40 to 50. In July, the price of tomato could touch Rs 100 rupees per kg and onion could cost between Rs 50 and 70 per kg.
