‘Beyond tragic’: Sachin Tendulkar condoles deadly Chinnaswamy stampede amid RCB’s IPL celebrations

New Delhi: India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar has mourned the deaths of the fans of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), caused by a stampede outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during the team’s maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title celebrations on Wednesday. At least 11 lives were lost as Sachin described the incident as “beyond tragic,” with other legends like Yuvraj Singh and AB de Villiers also joining in.

Apart from the 11-death-toll, more than 30 people were left injured in the stampede outside the popular venue – also the home of RCB, which celebrated their IPL title in the city, a day after lifting the trophy in Ahmedabad. Wild scenes erupted outside the ground as fans emerged in lakhs to enter the arena hosting the victory celebrations, but it all ended up chaotic and fatal.

“What happened at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, is beyond tragic. My heart goes out to every affected family. Wishing peace and strength to all,” Tendulkar wrote on “X” (formerly Twitter).

Ex-RCB players AB, Yuvi, Kumble on the deadly incident

Former South Africa and RCB batter AB de Villiers, who is immensely popular in Bengaluru and is adored nationwide, also expressed his sympathy for the victims. “My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the tragic events at the Chinnaswamy stadium today,” De Villiers wrote on “X”.

Meanwhile, former India skipper and coach Anil Kumble termed the incident as a “sad day for cricket.” Kumble, a Bengaluru native, said, “It’s a Sad day for Cricket! My heart goes out to the families of those who lost their lives while celebrating RCB’s victory today. Praying for the speedy recovery of those injured. Tragic !!”

Yuvraj Singh, former India and RCB player, added: “What was meant to be a moment of celebration turned into an unimaginable tragedy. My heart goes out to everyone affected by the incident in #Bengaluru. May the families find strength and the departed souls rest in peace.”

The incident was flamed by a huge rush of people to join a hastily-arranged celebration for the franchise by its management, which invited the RCB fans with a social media post hours before the mishap. The police and local administration were clearly overwhelmed by the lakhs who took to the streets to join the celebrations at a stadium which can only accommodate 35,000 people.

Sachin Tendulkar offered condolences to the families of those dead in the stampede at RCB’s maiden IPL title celebrations in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The incident claimed at least 11 lives, leaving several injured.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
