New Delhi: India’s newly appointed Test captain, Shubman Gill, made his first appearance at the pre-departure press conference in Mumbai alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir ahead of the England tour. The Men in Blue are scheduled to play five Test matches against the Three Lions, starting June 20.
The five Test matches against England will mark India’s first series in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. Gill and Co. will play the first Test at Headingley from June 20, the second at Edgbaston from July 2, the third Test at Lord’s from July 10, the fourth at Old Trafford in Manchester from July 23, and the final Test at The Oval from July 31. They will also play an intra-squad warm-up match against India A ahead of the first Test.
This will be India’s first Test series since the retirement of senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin from the longest format of the game, while Mohammed Shami is also missing from the squad.
‘We haven’t taken the call on which three matches Bumrah will play’: Gautam Gambhir
Head coach Gautam Gambhir provided a key update on Bumrah’s availability for the five-match Test series, stating that the team management has yet to decide which three matches Bumrah will play.
“We are going to have a discussion with him and depending on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well, and that is important,” Gambhir said in the press conference.
Last month, chief selector Ajit Agarkar also mentioned that the star pacer had been advised by medical staff not to risk playing several consecutive Test matches due to workload management. Indian Test captain Gill also stated that the squad has sufficient pace options, and most of them are in great form to be able to win Test matches from any situation.
