New Delhi: In a massive boost for the English cricket team, star pacer Mark Wood is expected to be fit for the last two Test matches against England. As majority of seasoned England pacers are out with injuries and the team has selected fairly inexperienced bowling attack for the opening Test match against India, this comes as a massive boost. The India-England five-Test series begins on June 20 at Headingly.
Wood, who was out for four months due to a knee injury, finally got his surgery done and is expected to be fit before the commencement of the fourth Test match. The seasoned fast bowler last took part in the Champions Trophy 2025 where he took just a lone wicket in two matches England played as they left the marquee event early.
Luke Wright confirms Wood’s participation
As per a report on Sky Sports, England selector Luke Wright revealed that Wood has been progressing well after his knee surgery and it seems that he will be fit before the fourth Test match. The fourth match of the series begins on July 23 at the Old Trafford, which is almost 1.5 months away from today. The English selector also said that the fast bowler has started bowling lightly in the nets and they are monitoring his progress each day.
‘I think Woody’s now started bowling just lightly, to be honest. He’s just off a few paces, but that’s been a great sign. So, he’s on the road to recovery. I think he’s more long-term, if we can get him back, he might have an option for the fourth or fifth Test. But again, each day it’s ticking off each box and making sure he’s OK’.
Earlier, pace spreadhead Jofra Archer also sustained an injury to his thumb during the final stages of the IPL 2025 and he also won’t be available for the opening match. Wright said that he is expected to join the team second Test onwards. To add to the team’s troubles, paceman Gus Atkinson also won’t be available for the series-opener in Leeds.
