Shreyas Iyer in race for Team India’s white-ball captaincy? Report makes huge claim

New Delhi: After getting immense success at the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a captain, Team India batter Shreyas Iyer is all about the exciting prospects moving ahead in his career. Iyer’s great work as a captain in the IPL has reportedly impressed the BCCI, whose one of “influential decision-makers” has revealed that Iyer is now in contention for India’s captaincy in the limited overs.

Becoming the only skipper to take three different franchises (Delhi Capitals in 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, and Punjab Kings in 2025) into the IPL finals, he has now “officially joined the race for India’s white-ball captaincy,” as per a report. He delivered KKR their third IPL title in the 2024 season, leading them throughout it with wit and charm.

Iyer’s recent transformation as a great skipper is being considered a major takeaway from the recently concluded IPL 2025. If a report from The Indian Express is to be believed, an “influential decision-maker of the Indian cricket” spoke to them about the possibility of Iyer as a white-ball captain for India.

“Right now, he just plays ODIs, but after this IPL, we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus, he has also now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” the official said, as quoted by The Indian Express.

In IPL 2025, Iyer smashed 604 runs in 17 games, being the top-scorer for Punjab Kings (PBKS), and his 87 not-out in the Qualifier 2 match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) was the highlight of all the six half-centuries that he scored through the season. He almost single-handedly rescued PBKS against MI and took them over the line to meet Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final – a rematch of Qualifier 1.

Current captains

As of now, the T20I Indian outfit is helmed by Suryakumar Yadav, while veteran batter Rohit Sharma continues as the ODI captain for the Men in Blue. It is notable that Iyer was not selected for India’s five-match away Test series against England. Although Iyer’s season ended without a trophy, he has firmly solidified his position as the skipper India might just need in the near future.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who was recently announced as the new Test skipper following Rohit’s retirement from the format, will be put to the test, and the verdict is highly anticipated. Nonetheless, Iyer ought to be considered among the top Indian players BCCI can look forward to for the captaincy role in the future.

Iyer can be termed as the perfect combination of Rohit due to his typical “Mumbaikar” quality, MS Dhoni due to his calmness, and Virat Kohli due to his often-aggressive nature, which only comes out when the need arises.
