New Delhi: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have decided to postpone the grand launch of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy. The naming ceremony was scheduled for Saturday, June 14, on the sidelines of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between South Africa and Australia at Lord’s.
According to a Cricbuzz report, the launch event has been postponed in the wake of the tragic plane crash at Ahmedabad International Airport. Over 275 people, including 241 on board the Air India aircraft AI-171, died on Thursday, June 12.
“Given the tragic events in India, the announcement may wait a while out of respect (for the lives lost). Both the BCCI and ECB officials are deciding on a flexible new date. The BCCI are still deciding on the right time for the announcement. The announcement had been kept flexible due to the tragedy,” the ECB official said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
The launch of the renamed trophy was scheduled to take place on Saturday, and it is understood that the invites have been sent to Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson, but the decision was taken at the last minute to call it off.
The ECB decided to retire the Pataudi Trophy for the England vs India Test series and changed its name to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy to honour James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar. He has scored 15,921 runs for India in 200 Test matches and still remains the leading run-scorer in the longest format, while Anderson is England’s greatest fast bowler, taking 704 wickets in 188 Test matches.
