New Delhi: The only respite amid this fierce heatwave across the country are cool foods and juices that help to keep our gut healthy and hydrated. Amid such weather conditions, the demand for ice creams significantly increases, but do we check the quality of the ice creams we eat?

On Monday, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Gautam Budh Nagar, carried out inspections and collected samples of ice creams from popular brands across the district, reported the Hindustan Times. As per the report, a total of 16 ice cream samples were collected from renowned eateries including those selling within the residential societies of Noida and Greater Noida.

The step has been taken based on a few complaints being reported about the unhygienic conditions at two cafes, further notices have been sent to the operators, as a warning to ensure the food safety and maintenance of proper hygiene, as per the report.

Ice cream is one of the most enjoyed delicacies all over the world but do we realise what impact it creates on our health and body organs.

Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine Gleneagles Hospitals Parel Mumbai told News9, “Market-based ice cream or frozen desserts are made with milk, cream, sugar, preservatives, and emulsifiers. They are loaded with fats and increase visceral fat. Factories use unhealthy amounts of preservatives, additives, and chemicals to maintain their shelf-life.”

Eating ice cream in excess can lead to fatty liver

“Excessive amounts of sugar present in ice cream can lead to serious health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, weight gain, and fatty liver. Individuals are advised to purchase ice cream from reliable sources or companies. Companies often sell ice creams in the name of frozen desserts,” said Dr Agarwal.

“Eating too much ice cream can highly impact your overall health as it can lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, gut infections, increased cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Some ice creams are stored in unhealthy conditions and the taste often gets compromised, making it unsafe to eat. So, it is better to limit ice cream consumption and safeguard your health.”

Earlier this month, in May three people had fallen ill allegedly after consuming momos at an eatery, prompting the department to swing into action and order temporary closure of the outlet, reported HT.
