New Delhi: People with eye powers mostly get confused when it comes to choosing between glasses and lenses. Well, whether you choose between eyeglasses or lenses, vision correction or comfort mostly depends on your personal preferences, lifestyle, comfort and choices. Each one has its pros and cons, while here comes the importance of maintaining proper eye health. So what should you consider?
In conversation with News9, Dr Nita A Shah, Head – of Clinical Services, at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Chembur said, “Choosing between glasses and contact lenses depends on factors like lifestyle, comfort, visual needs, and budget. Patients should discuss with their doctor to determine the best option for them.”
Glasses:
According to Dr Shah, “Glasses stand out as the most classic solution when it comes to vision correction. Their ease of use is unparalleled – you simply put them on and take them off as needed, requiring minimal maintenance. Additionally, they serve as a reliable barrier against various environmental factors such as dust, potential injuries, and harmful UV rays.”
“However, compared to contact lenses, glasses may offer a slightly narrower field of vision. Nevertheless, specialized glasses can address issues like double vision to a certain extent, providing functional benefits beyond mere vision correction. Moreover, for many, glasses are not just a visual aid but also a fashion statement, allowing individuals to express their style while ensuring clear vision.”
Notably, advancements like photochromic eyeglass lenses further enhance their utility by effectively blocking almost up to 100 per cent of UV light, a feature that contact lenses cannot replicate.
Contact Lenses:
Lenses emerge as the most practical alternative to glasses, offering a range of advantages that cater to various lifestyle needs. Contact lenses provide wearers with freedom from traditional glasses. This makes them particularly well-suited for activities like sports and social engagements where glasses may be inconvenient. Additionally, contact lenses eliminate issues such as fogging during monsoons, providing clear vision even in humid conditions.
Dr Shah noted, “Beyond their functional benefits, contact lenses also offer a cosmetic appeal, allowing individuals to enjoy a natural look without the visual obstruction of glasses. Furthermore, they often provide a broader field of vision compared to glasses, enhancing overall visual clarity. For those with high astigmatism, contact lenses may offer superior vision quality. Another advantage is the ease with which contact lenses can be paired with non-prescription sunglasses, adding versatility to eyewear choices. However, it’s essential to consider the potential drawbacks, such as the higher cost of contact lenses and the possibility of increased dryness in the eyes.”
Contact Lens Care:
• Hygiene is of utmost importance.
• Regularly check the expiry date of the lens and solution.
• Do not wear for more than 8 hours.
• Avoid sleeping with contact lenses on.
• Not suitable for swimming.
• Increased risk of eye infection compared to glasses.
