Kuwait fire tragedy: NORKA sets up 24-hour helpdesk for assistance
Thiruvananthapuram, June 13 – Looking to assist the families and friends of those affected in the fire tragedy in Kuwait which killed at least 43 Indians, the Non-resident Keralites Association (NoRKA-Roots) has set up a help desk. Among them those dead, many of them are reportedly from Kerala. NoRKA-Roots has announced that their Global Contact Centre’s 24-hour toll-free numbers 1800 425 3939 (from India) +91- 8802012345 (from abroad, missed call service) can be contacted for any help.
NoRKA-Roots resident vice chairman P Shriramakrishnan said they are working with Malayali associations in Kuwait along with Loka Kerala Sabha members to assist in the relief operations.
The helpdesk was initiated following the directions of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Steps are also being taken to the shift the mortal remains to their home state. The Chief Minister has given the direction to the officials to expedite the procedures on an emergency basis.
CM Vijayan wrote to Union External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar, urging him to ensure that adequate relief measures are taken.
“It is reported that several Indians, including Keralites, have lost their lives. We request that you take adequate steps to bring relief to the affected,” he said in the letter.
On June 12, a fire broke out in a building that belongs to NBTC group in Kuwait’s Mangaf city. At least 49 people, of which at least 40 are Indian nationals, died in the accident. Kuwait’s Health Ministry said at least 43 people were transferred to hospitals for treatment and four succumbed to injuries.
Indian Ambassador to Kuwait, Adarsh Swaika, visited the site of the incident in Mangaf as well as the hospitals where the victims were admitted. He said the Embassy was in constant touch with relevant Kuwaiti law enforcement, fire service and health authorities for necessary action and emergency medical health care.
