New Delhi: Every year on June 13, International Albinism Awareness Day is observed around the world to make people aware and fight for the human rights of people who have albinism. Albinism is an inherited condition due to which some people have very light skin, hair, and eyes, caused by the presence of less-than-usual melanin in their body. However, contrary to a popular belief which is prevalent even in the 21st century of scientific advancement, most people with albinism are just as healthy as others.

The observation of International Albinism Awareness Day on June 13, 2024, will be ten years since the start of this important day. This year, the theme of International Albinism Awareness Day is “10 years of IAAD: A decade of collective progress.” The theme focuses on the progress of the movement so far and makes a renewed commitment to its further improvement. Also, the theme brings forth the continuous efforts of albinism groups worldwide and highlights the need to continue the policy and practical changes which are needed still to ensure those with albinism enjoy full and equal enjoyment of rights.
International Albinism Awareness Day 2024: The need to celebrate this day
Albinism is something hereditary and it is found in both sexes irrespective of ethnicity. According to the estimates of the UN, in Europe and North America, 1 in every 17,000 to 20,000 people have albinism. It is found in greater numbers in sub-Saharan Africa. In Tanzania, 1 in 1,400 people are affected by it while in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, 1 in 1,000 people have albinism.
Albinism is dangerous as it makes extremely vulnerable to skin cancer. In some countries, many people aged between 30 to 40 with albinism die from skin cancer. Hence, people with albinism are to be given all the healthcare rights including frequent checkups, and protective clothing from the sun. Also, people with albinism often suffer from permanent visual impairment due to the absence of melanin in the skin and eyes. Not to mention the fact that face discrimination due to their skin colour.
