New Delhi: Without a doubt, the internet is the answer to everything in today’s time. It is known to solve all our queries and help us navigate through the world sitting in our homes. The usage of the internet has drastically increased in the past few years. But do you, how the consumption of the internet affects our brains? According to a recent study, researchers have called it a condition of ‘mental foginess’ or a condition called ‘brain rot’ which is an effect of spending too much time on the internet consuming low-quality content.
According to a report in the New York Times, there are many patients in the city with the condition of brain rot. These patients see brain rot as a badge of honour which is much like achieving high scores in video games. They compete for the screen time as if it were a price, said Dr Michael Rich, a paediatrician and founder of the hospital’s Digital Wellness Lab quoted in the NYT report.
As per Dr Rich, the term means the effects of excessive online activity usage and the users who are affected by brain rot tend to filter their daily experiences through the lens of online content, forming their communication and behaviour accordingly.
What is Brain Rot?
The term ‘brain rot’ was first coined around 2007 and was linked closely with what the researchers at the Boston Children’s Hospital now classify as Problematic Interactive Media Use. The condition of excessive internet use is getting numerous responses from experts and institutions. As per some experts, this is a kind of ‘digital addiction’.
It is a condition of mental fogginess, lethargy, decreased attention span, and brain or depletion in ways of thinking that results from excessive use of screens. Brain rot is an outcome of doom-scrolling, which involves long times of searching for negative and distressing news online.
