West Indies thrash Afghanistan with 104-run win in final group stage match

New Delhi: West Indies defeated Afghanistan by 104 runs at Darren Sammy National Stadium in St Lucia on June 18. Rovman Powell-led side ended Group C on top with 4 wins in 4 matches.

After opting to bowl first, Afghanistan got off to a great start as they got the wicket of Brandon King in the second over of the innings. Nicholas Pooran walked into bat on No.3 and smashed the Afghanistan bowlers all around the park. He scored 36 runs off Azmatullah Omarzai’s second over and took his team from 37/1 to 73/1 in just one over.

He amassed 98 runs off 53 balls, his remarkable knock was laced with six boundaries and eight maximums. He stitched a crucial 80 runs partnership with Johnson Charles and 64 runs partnership with Rovman Powell. The West Indies were 92/1 at the end of the six overs and this is the highest powerplay score of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Afghanistan all-out for 114

Chasing the target of 219 runs, Afghanistan lost the wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the first over. Ibrahim Zadran along with Gulbadin Naib stitched a partnership of 45 runs but the other batters failed to contribute in the run-chase.

Obed McCoy took 3 wickets and Akeal Hossein and Motie also got two wickets each. Russell and Alzarri Joseph also got one wicket each. Both teams have already qualified for the Super 8 stage of the tournament. The West Indies will face England in their first match of the Super 8 and Afghanistan will square off against India on June 20.

The West Indian captain Rovman Powell talked about his team’s performance after the match and said that this is the hard work they have put in and also praised Nicholas Pooran for his sensational knock.

“It shows the hard work we have put in in the last year or so. It is on the back of hard work, Nicholas has had a good 12 months not only in franchise cricket but for West Indies as well. We started the tournament with a little advantage as we are playing at home and know the conditions”.
