New Delhi: Has match fixing returned to cricket? Are the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 matches fixed? Media reports suggest that the ongoing showpiece event in the US and the West Indies has been rocked by match fixing, with a player being approached with corrupt intentions by a former cricketing international.
A complete pause was witnessed since the last few years regarding the corrupt practices at the biggest cricketing stage but these fresh details have once again given birth to cricket’s most hated enemy, which not only spoils the repute but also diminishes the charm of the ‘gentleman’s game’.
Uganda player approached by former Kenya international
According to a report in news agency PTI, a player from Uganda was approached by a former Kenya international player, who tried to reach out to him multiple times with corrupt intentions. This incident happened during the recently-concluded league stage of the marquee event in Guyana and it came to light once the Uganda international approached the International Cricket Council (ICC) with the complaint.
Following ICC’s strict anti-corruption protocol, the Uganda player informed the apex body that he had been approached multiple times by the Kenya international using different phone numbers with corrupt intentions. ICC’s Anti-Corruption too acted swiftly on the matter and sent a circular to all associate nations warning them of a possible ‘match-fixing’ approach from the former Kenya international.
“It is not a surprise that this person targeted a player from the Ugandan national team. Associate nations, as compared to the big teams, are soft targets for corruption but in this case the player who was approached did the needful by informing the ICC at the earliest,” a source told PTI.
Meanwhile, Uganda ended their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a memorable win against Papua New Guinea and losses against Afghanistan, New Zealand and West Indies. Uganda, first-timers in the competition alongside Canada and co-hosts USA, played three of their four league games in Guyana.
