World Hydrography Day 2024: What is the theme for this year and why is it important?

New Delhi: Every June 21, World Hydrography Day is celebrated. It is an international day that appreciates hydrographers’ work and highlights their global impact. These professionals, who play a crucial role in determining modern maritime borders and underwater topography, have their efforts recognised by the United Nations (UN) in 1970 with the establishment of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). A dedicated day was established in 2005 to celebrate and appreciate their work. Each year, this day is observed with a different theme, reflecting the evolving importance of hydrography. Let’s delve deeper into this significant day and its theme.

World Hydrography Day 2024: Theme

The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) has set the theme for World Hydrography Day 2024 as ‘Hydrographic Information—Enhancing Safety, Efficiency and Sustainability in Marine Activities ‘. This theme underscores the importance of hydrographic information in promoting safety, efficiency, and sustainability in marine activities.

With the ongoing transformation in navigation like e-navigation, autonomous shipping, and reduction of emissions, which lead to a profound evolution of hydrographic services, and in a context of high demands for digital data, the International Hydrographic Organization is committed to:

Deliver standards for hydrographic data and specifications of hydrographic products.
Develop standards, specifications, and guidelines where data assurance is needed.
Capacity building and training should be used to develop capacity and increase the Member State’s ability to support maritime navigation’s safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
Motivate the maritime community, including academia, international organisations and industry, to contribute actively to developing and using new standardised maritime data products and services.
Become more responsive in the interest of a sustainable ocean globally.
Invite broader outreach to hydrographic data to global policy drivers and non-navigation users, including conservation, climate, and hazard mitigation.

World Hydrography Day 2024: What is the importance of the day?

Hydrography explains the importance of the ocean’s underwater surface. Geologists predict sea patterns and underwater currents and determine the temperatures and mineral content below the surface.

Hydrography not only assists in navigation and the development of sonar and other navigation tools for ships and submarines, but it also holds the potential to assist in the future development of underwater colonies for humans. This future-oriented aspect of hydrography is truly inspiring.

What is Hydrography?

Hydrography is a fascinating science that measures and describes the physical features of the navigable portion of the Earth’s surface and adjoining coastal areas. Through their work, hydrographic surveyors provide a unique glimpse of what the ‘floor’ of our water bodies looks like, enhancing our understanding of the mysterious underwater world.

World Hydrography Day is observed on June 21 every year to raise awareness about hydrography and its role in improving knowledge of the seas and oceans.   knowledge Knowledge News, Photos and Videos on General Knowledge
