Mumbai: Actress Sonakshi Sinha tied the knot with her long-term boyfriend, Zaheer Iqbal, in a civil ceremony in Mumbai on June 23 followed by a reception for friends and industry colleagues at Bastian in Dadar. The couple, who had been dating for seven years, chose to marry on the anniversary of the day they fell in love. Later in the day, they hosted a grand wedding reception for industry friends.

At the reception, Sonakshi opted for a vibrant sindoori red silk saree from Raw Mango, featuring a ‘chand buta’ motif in silk brocade and a rich golden zari border, costing Rs 79,800.

She complemented her look with emerald and gold jewellery, a choker necklace, earrings, her engagement ring, and a red and gold chooda. Her look was finished with a centre-parted bun adorned with sindoor and a sleek bun adorned with gajra, winged eyeliner, mascara, alta, a red bindi, glass bangles, mauve lips, and blush showcasing an elegant bridal ensemble. She was styled by Zaheer Iqbal’s sister and celebrity stylist, Sanam Ratansi.

Wondered why Sonakshi chose the ‘chand buta’ motif Banarasi saree. Possibly, for its relevance in Islam. Zaheer Iqbal’s religion. Their marriage symbolised love transcending religious boundaries. The couple chose a civil ceremony, honouring each other’s religions and their respect for each other’s cultures can be seen in the minute details.

She even opted for an alta instead of mehndi.

Sonakshi wore comfortable slip-on wedges, Avani Metallic by Aprajita Toor priced at Rs. 5,499. It featured large floral discs and arrow-shaped cutouts designed with a toe loop and detailed braided accents on the front.

Zaheer complemented Sonakshi in a white bandhgala sherwani jacket, a white shirt and pants, tan loafers, a backswept hairstyle, and a trimmed beard for the reception.

For the wedding, Sonakshi wore her mother’s 44-year-old white Chikankari saree, while Zaheer complemented her attire in a matching white chikankari embroidered kurta and pants set.

A highlight of the event was Sonakshi’s choice to wear her mother’s vintage saree, a stunning Chikankari piece that added a touch of heritage and sentiment to the occasion.

Chikankari, a classic embroidery technique from Lucknow, is famous for its detailed white threadwork on materials such as muslin, cotton, silk, and georgette. Thought to have been brought to India by Mughal Empress Noor Jahan, this craft features more than 32 unique stitches that create its intricate patterns. The method starts with block printing the design onto the fabric, followed by expert stitching with raw thread.

People across all religions especially Muslims prefer or love Chikankari outfits. Zaheer too wore a chikankari kurta.

Sonakshi fulfilled a childhood dream by wearing her mom’s saree, paired with a choker Kundan necklace, gold bangles, her engagement ring, and Kundan earrings. Her look was completed with pink lips, mascara, traditional alta on her hands, and a gajra-adorned bun.

By upcycling her mother, Poonam Sinha’s ivory embroidered saree intricately embroidered in 1980, Sonakshi made a sustainable and stylish choice. This family heirloom was seamlessly incorporated into her wedding ensemble, reflecting an elegant and eco-friendly decision.
