New Delhi: Gulbadin Naib’s antics became a major talking point on social media after Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 8 runs via DLS method in a rain-affected Super Eight match to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals. Afghanistan scripted history as they rose from the ashes to secure their maiden spot in the semi-finals of a T20 World Cup.
Naib triggered a controversy and a laughter riot on social media with a ‘supposed’ hamstring injury during the game. After his antics went viral, the Afghanistan all-rounder responded to Indian spinner R Ashwin’s ‘red card’ tweet for him.
Reacting to the hilarious incident, Ashwin had asked for a ‘red card’ for Naib. The Afghanistan star made a hilarious K3G (Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam) reference while responding to Ashwin’s post. “Kabi khushi kabi gham main huta hai Hamstring, ” Naib wrote replying to Ashwin’s post with a few laughing emojis.

What did Gulbadin Naib do during Afghanistan vs Bangladesh match?
The incident took place during Bangladesh’s run-chase in the game. Bangladesh were 81/7, just 2 runs behind the DLS par score when rain started interrupting the proceedings at the Arons Vale Ground in St Vincent. Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott was spotted signalling the players to slow things down in a bid to try and remain ahead as far as the DLS par score was concerned.
Noticing the head coach’s signal, Naib instantly fell on the ground holding his hamstring, making it appear as if he had suffered from a cramp. However, Naib was seen running onto the ground seemingly fit just ten minutes after the game resumed post a short delay due to the rain. The incident led to criticism for Naib while some also poked fun at him.
Commentator Simon Doull was not happy with Naib’s antics and criticised him for his actions calling it ‘unacceptable’. The other commentators also took notice of Naib’s strange fall and poked fun at him for ‘faking’ a hamstring injury.
“The coach sends a message out to say Slow it down, slow it down, and the first slip just dives on the ground needlessly. That is unacceptable. Gone off anyway. I get that might have gone off anyway for the rain,” Doull said on air.
Nonetheless, Afghanistan managed to successfully defend the low-key total of 114 runs to win by 8 runs via the DLS method. Afghanistan will now lock horns with an in-form South Africa in the first semi-finals on Thursday, June 27. South Africa are unbeaten in the tournament so far.
