Biden, Trump Lock Horns in 2024 First Presidential Debate Without Handshakes

Washington: In the first presidential debate for the upcoming US elections in 2024, both leading candidates, President Joe Bide and former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump lashed out at each other pointing fingers. The debate officially kicked off, with both candidates taking their places behind podiums but didn’t shake hands, setting a tone for the evening.

The two candidates arrived in Georgia for the debate, a chance for the voters to see how the presumptive nominees would work for the US’s future.

The 90-minute-long debate began with Biden noticeably sounding hoarse, which the White House later said he had a cold.

Biden vs Trump Highlights:

When asked about the economy, Biden claimed that he inherited an economy which was on a “freefall,” adding that the Covid pandemic was poorly handled.

However, Trump responded by saying that under his presidency, the US had the greatest economy in history.

“We have never done so well. Everybody was amazed by other countries were copying us,” he said.

Furthermore, roughly 50 minutes in the debate got intense with time with both leaders launching personal attacks on each other.

It began with Trump raising Biden’s name twice when discussing criminal conviction.

Taking a backshot at him, Biden cited accounts when Trump had described soldiers who died in the Normandy landing as “suckers” and noted his own son Beau, who served in Iraq and later died of cancer.

“My son was not a loser, was not a sucker. You’re the sucker. You’re the loser,” Biden said.

Clash on World Role

Speaking on the world stage, Trump described Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan as the “most embarrassing moment in the history of our country” and said it further encouraged Russia to invade Ukraine.

“If we had a real president, a president that knew that was respected by Putin, he would have never he would have never invaded Ukraine.”

This comes as Trump had a long history of positive comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s toughness, including calling Putin’s tactics in the 2022 invasion of Ukraine “genius” and “very savvy.”
