India’s World Cup heroes still stranded in Barbados after Hurricane Beryl, Jay Shah provides update

New Delhi: As the nation awaits its heroes, the Indian team remains stranded in Barbados after their memorable triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024. The members of the Indian team were scheduled to depart for India on Monday but their travel plans were delayed after Hurricane Beryl hit the Caribbean Islands in the wee hours of Monday.

The dangerous hurricane has led to a suspension of operations at the international airport in Barbados as the entire country is in lockdown with winds and storms lashing the island nation. As per a report in PTI, the World Cup-winning squad was set to depart for India via a charter flight on Monday but their departure was delayed due to the airport being shut.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah provided a crucial update on the Indian team’s travel plans as he spoke to the reporters in Barbados. Shah said BCCI’s immediate priority is to get to move the players and support staff safely from the hurricane-hit region and take them home before thinking about felicitation plans.

“Like you people, we are also stuck here. First we need to see how to get the players and everyone out of here safely and then we will think about the felicitation upon arrival in India,” said Shah, who was present at the Kennington Oval on Saturday for the final between India and South Africa.

Airport expected to remain shut till Tuesday afternoon

Due to the hurricane, operations at the Barbados airport are expected to remain suspended till Tuesday afternoon, as per a source in BCCI, as reported by PTI. Thus the players and the members of the support staff of the Indian team will remain confined to their hotel rooms till the situation improves. BCCI is in talks with some charter flight operators to get the Indian squad back home.

The board is also reportedly making efforts to get the stranded Indian media personnel in the hurricane-hit region to a safer place in Barbados. The Indian players are expected to return home to a grand reception having won a World Cup title after a wait of 13 years. India last won a world title when MS Dhoni led the team to a memorable triumph in the 2011 ODI World Cup.

India also brought an end to an 11-year-long wait for an ICC trophy with their second T20 World Cup title. They became the first team to win the T20 World Cup as invincibles having not lost a single match throughout the tournament.
