New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a staggering sum of Rs 125 crore (approximately $15 million) as prize money for the Rohit Sharma-led Team India after their T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. India defeated South Africa by seven runs in the final at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday to lift their second T20 World Cup title.
India shut their critics in style as they brought an end to their 11-year-old ICC trophy drought in style with a memorable victory. Rohit & Co. became the first team to win the title as invincibles having not lost a single match throughout their campaign in the tournament. Rohit also became the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to win the T20 World Cup.

The prize sum of Rs 125 crore announced by the BCCI for the T20 World Cup 2024 winners turned heads, but how much did the Indian cricket board pay to Dhoni & Co. as prize money when India won the 2011 ODI World Cup? As per a report in Sportstar, each member of the 2011 World Cup-winning side was paid Rs 2 crore.
As per the report, the BCCI paid a prize sum of approximately Rs 39 crore in total, including the bonuses announced for the support staff and the selectors at the time. While the players got Rs 2 crore each, the members of the support staff were paid Rs 50 lakh each and the selectors were rewarded with a sum of Rs 25 lakh each.
India brought an end to the country’s 28-year-long wait for their second ODI World Cup title by winning the trophy in 2011. The Rs 125 crore paid by the BCCI to the T20 World Cup 2024 winners is more than three times the prize money earned by Dhoni and his men in 2011. Dhoni remains the only Indian captain to have won all three major ICC limited-overs trophies – the T20 World Cup, the ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy.
