Rishi Sunak Vs Keir Starmer: UK Goes to Polls Today | All You Need to Know

New Delhi: As the United Kingdom heads for general elections today, July 4, the high-stakes election campaign came to a close on Wednesday. The election will witness a fierce fight between the ruling Conservative Party and the opposition Labour Party. It is being speculated that these polls will likely end the current reign of the Conservatives after a period of 14 years of ruling. While UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is trying to secure another term in office, the opposition Labour Party is expecting a clean sweep.

PM Rishi Sunak claimed that his party is still “fighting hard” while one of his closest allies conceded defeat saying that the Tories are going to face a “landslide defeat” in the elections.

Global Media outlet Reuters reported that opinion polls show the centre-left Labour Party is set for a big win in Thursday’s polling. The election winner is likely to be announced in the early hours of Friday, with opinion polls suggesting that Labour Party leader Keir Starmer will take the keys to the prime minister’s 10 Downing Street office.

The Britons will exercise their franchise on July 4 from 7am to 10pm local time to elect representatives in 650 constituencies in the UK.

Once the results are out, the leader of the party with the most votes will be appointed the Prime Minister. After the counting of the votes is over, the British monarch (presently King Charles III) will invite the leader of the majority party to form a new government. The current parliament was dissolved on May 30 after the election dates were announced.

The Opposition Labour Party, in its election campaign, underlined the voter fatigue with the change in PMs in the Tories’ ongoing term, Brexit, the crumbling economy and multiple scandals involving top leaders from ruling party.

However, Sunak highlighted the migration issue in the UK and put UK’s economic revival as his top campaign point. The outgoing prime minister asserted that a change in governance could hamper economic recovery.
