UEFA Euro 2024: Lamine Yamal becomes the youngest player to lift Euro trophy

New Delhi: Spain brings home their fourth title after winning a thrilling final in the UEFA Euro 2024. In the process, Lamine Yamal has become the youngest player to lift the Euro trophy, breaking an eight-year old-record held by Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches.

Sanches made his appearance in the 2016 final when Portugal took against France. Portugal won their first Euro tournament that year making him the then youngest player to lift the trophy.

Yamal also broke Pele’s 66-year-old record of the youngest player to feature in a major tournament. Pele held the record when he played in the 1958 World Cup final against Sweden at 17 years and 249 days. Yamal was only 17 and one day old when he started against Spain. Lamine’s assist in the final also made him the youngest player ever to assist in the Euros final.

The Barcelona forward also recorded four assists in the tournament, which is the most by any player in a single European tournament since 1980. It shows how important the Spanish prodigy has been in this glorious La Roja win. For his contribution to Spain’s campaign, Yamal was declared the Best Young Player of the tournament. He is a find of the tournament for the Spanish team and will carry the team’s glorious legacy.

Spain first won the Euro trophy in 1964 and has since won twice, in 2008 and 2012. In the tournament, Spain became the first team to win seven games and were unbeaten throughout. In the group stage of the tournament, Spain didn’t concede a single goal from all three matches.

In the first half of the game, both teams attacked the goalpost but were unsuccessful in their pursuit to break the score. Italy scored the opener after Nico Williams scored from Yamal’s drive down to the right before he cut inside. He curled the ball into an unmarked William on the far side of the who finished by slotting on the far side of the box, which Jordan Pickford was unable to reach.
