New Delhi: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Amit Mishra made some shocking revelations as he revealed the reason behind the ugly feud between former LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star Virat Kohli in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The infamous fight took place during a match between RCB and LSG at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
Opening up on the infamous saga, Mishra revealed Kohli was abusing LSG players which led to the feud between him and Gambhir as the ex-LSG mentor intervened for his players. It all started after Kohli was involved in a verbal spat with LSG pacer Naveen-ul-Haq during RCB’s batting. The RCB batter was later also involved in arguments with the likes of Kyle Mayers and others.
Days ahead of Gambhir’s reunion with Kohli in the Indian dressing room after he was appointed the head coach of the Indian team, Mishra recalled the ugly episode and revealed what led to the fight. Mishra said Kohli was abusing LSG players and saying nasty stuff even though he had no apparent issues with any of them.
Mishra was batting on the non-striker’s end when Kohli and Naveen clashed with each other during LSG’s run-chase. The LSG spinner claimed he asked Kohli to calm down and not fight with a younger player as it would only harm his reputation, however, his request fell on deaf years.
“Virat Kohli started abusing our players. What is his problem with Kyle Mayers? Naveen-Ul-Haq is bowling, and he is saying stuff. He said the wrong things to a few players and was making gestures towards the crowd. A lot of things could have been be avoided, but Virat Kohli did not avoid them,” Mishra said on Shubankar Mishra’s YouTube podcast.
“When I was batting with Naveen, I told Virat Kohli, ‘Who are you talking to, explain to him.’ I told him, ‘he is silent, you are going on,’ although he was very respectful towards him. I told him ‘even if he misbehaved, you are the bigger player,’” Mishra said on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube channel,” he added.

‘Kohli started abusing once again after the match finished’
Mishra insisted legends like Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni are well respected in the cricketing circles due to their good behaviour with the youngsters. He agreed that Kohli is aggressive on the field and never shies away from sledging a player but explained that the RCB batter abusing LSG players even after the match didn’t go down well with mentor Gambhir, who got involved in an ugly feud.
“Why are Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni respected and loved, because they respect junior players. I agree you are aggressive but do not do all this. I told him ‘He is nothing in front of you, if you argue with him, it’s your insult,” said Mishra.
“It can happen, Virat Kohli is an aggressive player, even I was but I ended it after the match. The problem happened when the match finished, he once again started abusing. This is when Gambhir got angry. Why you started again? I stood with Gambhir, go now. Even I got angry, and then he went off. Later, Naveen told us he was once again insulting him. You kept carrying on, which is not good. You are an icon,” added the LSG spinner.
On the podcast, Mishra also revealed that Gambhir eventually ended the feud between him and Kohli by approaching him for a conversation during the IPL 2024 earlier this year. Mishra claimed Gambhir showed big heart as he approached Kohli and asked him about his and his family’s well-being while ending the feud between the duo.
Gambhir and Kohli will now be working together for the Indian team and it remains to be seen how the duo will bond with each other. Gambhir’s first assignment as the head coach will be India’s upcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka at home.
