New Delhi: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common form of autoimmune inflammatory disease that affects around 0.7 per cent people in India. Around 55 per cent of people in India resort to the primary health-care centers as their curtsy point of contact. Moreover, when it comes to an alternative therapy to arthritis, many opt for an ayurvedic approach or Yoga. Supporting this, a recent study conducted by AIIMS Delhi found that yoga can have a positive impact on health of individuals with RA.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition that is characterised by a joint inflammation and related pain. The long-term autoimmune disorder potentially affects other body systems including the heart, lungs and the brain.
Yoga for physical and mental health
Yoga has been associated to both physical and mental health well being in people. According to the Lab for Molecular Reproduction and Genetics, the Anatomy Department, and the Department of Rheumatology AIIMS who conducted the study examined how yoga could provide potential benefits to patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
The researchers found that yoga benefits arthritic patients at the cellular and molecular levels along with relieving the pain. In recent announcement, the Ayush Ministry revealed that yoga may reduce the inflammation by regulating cellular damage and oxidative stress (OS).
Through Yoga, the pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines, relieves the endorphin levels, lowering cortisol and CRP levels, and regulating melatonin rhythms. This helps to prevent the cycle of inflammation and an over active immune system.
Yoga promotes Neuro plasticity
As per the study, Yoga promotes the Neuro plasticity and helps in coping with the mechanisms and diminishes the symptoms of co-morbid depression. The research further offers evidence for the potential of yoga as an additional therapy for RA patients.
However, yoga may not regulate the symptoms like pain or stiffness but could help in controlling and improving the quality of life. Yoga is considered to be one of the best alternatives and that is because, it doesn’t have any side effects and offers a cost-effective, natural therapy for managing severe autoimmune conditions, as per a report of Health Ministry.
