New Delhi: The Indian Railways allows passengers who have a reserved ticket in their name to transfer the ticket in the name of another person. This is a useful provision since it allows passengers to transfer tickets in case of a last-minute change of plans. Often, passengers book tickets much in advance to avoid a last-minute rush, getting waitlisted and Tatkal booking charges.
However, this may change at the last minute owing to work or other emergencies. Let us try to understand this rule in detail.
IRCTC ticket transfer to family member
The Indian Railways allows passengers with confirmed tickets to transfer the ticket in the name of another passenger. However, this is allowed only under the condition that the passenger in whose name the ticket is transferred is a blood relative of the passenger. Passengers can only transfer their confirmed ticket in the name of their:
Father
Mother
Brother
Sister
Son
Daughter
Husband
Wife
The confirmed ticket cannot be transferred in the name of another relative. Cousins or in-laws are not included in the list of relatives eligible for ticket transferability. Waitlisted and reservation against cancellation tickets are not eligible for name transfer.
Train ticket transfer rules
Indian Railways’ ticket transfer rules show that the name change can be made 24 hours prior to the train’s scheduled departure.
Whether the ticket was booked online or offline, the name change can only take place at the Indian Railways’ physical ticket booking window.
The person in whose name the ticket was confirmed must visit the ticketing window with a copy of their ticket and also carry a copy of the Aadhaar or any other identification of the person in whose name the ticket needs to be transferred. Copies of these documents must be deposited at the railway reservation counter.
The ticket will be transferred into the blood relative’s name only after these documents are submitted and verified.
