New Delhi: Despite the Euro 2024 finals heartbreak, Harry Kane has reportedly decided not to retire from international football. Kane scored three goals for the side in the tournament but failed to inspire his team into winning the final. However, the 30-year-old has now decided to take inspiration from Argentina star Lionel Messi and continue playing in the international arena.
According to media sources, Kane isn’t thinking about international retirement after losing out on consecutive European Championship titles. The Three Lions suffered a 1-2 loss against Spain on Sunday in the Euro finals in Olympiastadion, Berlin.
The Bayern Munich superstar is reportedly now looking at how the Argentina captain shaped his career after losing the FIFA World Cup 2014 in the finals and ending up as runners-up in back-to-back Copa 2015 and 2016 editions. After losing the 2016 Copa, Messi announced his decision to retire from the international level. The retirement lasted only two months, and Messi returned to help his side win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He has now helped his side successfully defend the Copa America trophy.
With the World Cup in two years, Kane will hope to replicate a role similar to Messi’s in Argentina camp. The former Tottenham Hotspur striker debuted for the English side in 2015 and has since become the highest goalscorer for his nation with 66 goals from 98 games.
Messi is reportedly fond of the English captain and even pushed for his former club, PSG, to sign him in the summer of 2023. Kane, though, went to Bayern Munich, where he scored 44 goals out of 45 games. In the UEFA Champions League 2023-24, with his eight goals, Kane was the joint scorer of the tournament along with Kylian Mbappe, who was then playing for PSG.
Kane has lost six finals in his career. His first of two Cup losses came in Tottenham during the Carabao Cup final. The biggest setback in his domestic career was the 2019 loss in the UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool. As part of the England team, he lost the Euro 2020 final against Italy.
His move to Bayern Munich was expected to end his trophy drought, but the Bavarians ended the season trophyless in Kane’s debut season in the Bundesliga. With an early Champions League exit and losing out on the Bundesliga trophy, Kane also lost the German Super Cup final. His performance in the recently concluded Euro tournament wasn’t up to the mark. Still, Kane can instil confidence in this English side and lead by example in at least one more major tournament.
Kane is reportedly not considering retiring from international football after Euro final loss and hopes to replicate Messi’s career since losing back-to-back Copa losses. Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
